The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear and recognize his voice and come to him. He calls them by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. John 10:3-4

My wife and I don't have sheep, we have miniature donkeys and they are much the same. There is no chance that a stranger could lead them out of their pen. At the sound of a stranger they are on guard. We were at one time strangers to them but by caring for them and talking with them daily they have learned our voices and recognize us. Of course we know each of them individually by name.

In their own ways they communicate with us. Cinnamon, named for his color, wants more than just words, he wants affection. When you put his hay in the bunk he will take a few steps away and just stand there looking at you untill you go to him and give him some hands on attention. His starts moving his bottom lip to let you know you have hit his sweet spot.

Jesus uses the sheep analogy because anyone with animals gets it. They know exactly what He is saying. It is such a beautiful picture. Jesus goes on to say that He is the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd sacrifices His life for the sheep. I am the Good Shepherd; known by my sheep, and they know Me.

The sheep learn to recognize their Shepherd through time spent with Him. He is not standing at a distance grading our performance, He is walking with us as we grow. We were made to hear God because we were made to be in relationship with Him. Through His word and His Spirit He delights to make Himself known. God is a better communicator than I am a listener but I am thankful He is the Good Shepherd and patient.

Heavenly Father, thank you for inviting us into conversation with You. Thank you that You are the Good Shepherd and a good Father who patiently teaches his children. Help us to grow in confidence, not because we hear perfectly, but because You're faithful to lead us. In Jesus name. AMEN
