The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" John 1:29
John was literally saying Jesus is taking away the sin of the world. Heavenly Father, John was saying by use of his wording, that Jesus was lifting up the sin of the world. Like a wet, dark, heavy, blanket, that had settled onto all of creation, Jesus was lifting it up. Not only did He lift it up, but He placed it on His shoulders and took it to the cross, like a sacrificed lamb, His blood was shed to cleanse it away. To atone for it.
I think of the imagery used in John chapter 15 where You, Heavenly Father, are the Master gardener. You lift up the branches and examine them for mold or fungus or anything which could keep them from bearing bountiful fruit. Not only do you examine them but you cleanse them which is part of the word purge.
Behold! The lamb of God, who lifts up off of the world its sin. What a magnificent revelation given to John. To recognize Jesus and to proclaim Him to the world. Though John recognized Him through Divine insight, he said he was not worthy to loosen His sandal straps.
Honestly Lord there are days that I feel like the devil is trying to throw the heavy, wet, blanket, back onto me. I have to cry out to You and remind myself that what You have done, the devil cannot undo. That greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.
I too can relate to John's unworthy feeling. I bow myself before You in humble gratitude thanking You for being the Lamb of God who has lifted up my sin and taken it upon Yourself.
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior's blood
Died He for me, who caused His pain
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!!
Thank You Heavenly Father, for sending Your Son into the world that the world through Him might be saved. Thank you that I have looked unto Jesus for salvation. I believe He is the lamb of God which has taken away my sin. Help me learn to completely believe that and let go of even the memory that I have of my shortcomings. Help me to see myself as who I am in You, not who I was when I was under sin. In Jesus name AMEN.
