A woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. Matthew 26:7
I am impressed once again with the intuition of women. Perhaps she was led by the Holy Spirit, or perhaps it was just her intuition. Either way with profound love for Jesus she took a years worth of income to purchase this oil and annoint Jesus just hours before His crucifixion. I imagine even as He was flogged and mocked the aroma of Nard still radiated from His body. The anointing of a King for His burial.
As a young child wiseman brought gold frankincense and myrrh to honor this young King, Israel's Messiah. Now near the end of His days a humble loving woman honors Him. The King, Israel's Messiah. Her act will forever be remembered. Her act was a beautiful lavish thing that flowed from a devoted heart.
Mary had an intuition that led her to believe Jesus was indeed the Messiah, King of Israel. Such annointing was for Prophets and Kings. While others where uncertain of who He was, Mary was not. Her love and devotion was beautiful and could be seen by all.
How can our love and devotion for Jesus be seen by others. Can it be described as Mary's was. Many were criticizing her for her actions, describing them as wasteful. Yet because she knew in her heart who Jesus really was, even with the expense of the Nard, she knew He was worth every penny.
This "woman" left us a beautiful example. Heavenly Father may we follow it and be challenged by it. Would we side with the crowd and think it was wasteful or be moved as Mary was? May our love be as pure and devoted as hers was. I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
