Don't let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good. Romans 12:21
Why would God tell us to conquer evil by doing good?
This biblical principle isn't about ignoring or excusing evil, but about refusing to be defined or controlled by it. By responding to evil with good, individuals can:
*Break negative cycles: retaliation often escalates conflict, while responding with good can de-escalate situations and potentially lead to reconciliation.
* Reflect God's character: doing good, even when wronged, reflects God's love and grace, which is a powerful witness to others.
* Bring about positive change: in some cases, responding with good can prompt repentance and change in the person who initially acted with evil.
It is important to acknowledge that overcoming evil with good is not always easy and requires:
* Grace and strength: this is often a supernatural work that requires God's grace and strength to overcome the natural inclination to retaliate.
* Focus on the long term: the effects of overcoming evil with good may not always be immediate, but it can create a positive ripple effect overtime.
* humility and trust: it requires trusting that God is in control and that His way is ultimately the best way, even when it's not the easiest.
This reminds me of the Tacoma Bridge built in 1940. It was the third longest suspended bridge in the world. It was quite a sight to behold. (not that I was there) But what's most famous about this bridge is not the expense of building it or the manpower to build it, or the vast valley that it was suspended over, but the day it fell apart.
Everything in nature has a frequency. Frequency is powerful. Most of us are not even aware of the frequencies around us. One day in Tacoma Washington as the breeze blew down through this valley it created a frequency that matched the bridges frequency. When that happened the bridge began to shake and move violently until sections of it just fell into the river below. The engineers had not taken into account the power of frequency.
So how can good overcome evil? Not by producing the same amount or more evil, but by simply introducing good. Good, like the consistent breeze flowing through that Valley in Tacoma Washington, creates an environment that overcomes evil. Its God's design.
Fix a meal and feed your enemy, in doing so you shall heap burning coals of shame on their head. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. Never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.
Thank you Heavenly Father for Your grace and strength to do what does not come naturally to us that we may reflect Your glory. That we may conquer evil by doing good consistently over time. In Jesus name AMEN AMEN
