Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Joel 2:32
What does it mean to call on the name of the Lord? Lord, I see throughout the Old Testament that Abraham and others called on the name of the Lord. In a public way they would give thanks, worship, and proclaim the name of the Lord.
Calling on the name of the Lord is basic for salvation and presupposes faith in You, Lord. You promise to save those who, in faith, call upon Your name. We see that in Romans 10:13. " Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
But I really like the greek word Peter used when telling people to "call" upon the Lord. He used the word epikaloumai, which means "appeal". It is the same word Paul used when he asked to stand before Caesar for his trial. He said I appeal to Caesar. Paul was submitting to the authority of Caesar and resting his fate on Caesar's judgment.
I like the idea of "appealing" through You, Jesus. You sacrificed Yourself so that people like me could appeal to the Father through You. Not on our own merrit but based upon what You have done for us. What a beautiful thought to think about. It reminds me of the statement, "I have peace about dying, because I am not good enough." The truth is I will never be "good enough" to appeal to You based on my life. It is such a wonderful thing that I can appeal to the highest Authority based on the greatest sacrifice ever made.
Thank You Jesus that my "appeal" is through You. You are the Beloved Son who gave His life as a ransom for all who will "call upon" You. I love the richness of Your word that constantly brings me truth that fills my heart with peace, hope, and joy. Thank you in Jesus name. AMEN
