We keep looking to the Lord our God for His mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal. Psalm 123:2

So much is said with the eyes, a nod, a gesture, or a facial expression.

I was reminded of this as I talked with my brother in the Lord who works with Deaf children in Haiti. He was meeting with the mother of two deaf girls. She did not call her girls by their names but used a derogatory term for them that the culture has produced and uses for Deaf people. My friend asked this woman if she loved her children. She said yes, they are my daughters, of course I love them. He asked her if her daughters knew that she loved them. She expressed her frustration with not being able to talk with them. The girls don't even know their given names, how can I tell them I love them?

Today's verse reminds me again of all that is communicated through our body language. If this mother would take the hands of her daughters and look them squarely in the eyes with a loving look, words would not be necessary. She would be saying I see you, you have value to me, I love you my daughters.

It reminds me of the saying I once heard, "Witness always, use words when necessary."

How do we show those around us that we value them? Do we look people in the eyes and give them a smile? So many people go through their day feeling like nobody sees them. Eye contact and smiles encourage people. When we deliberately don't make eye contact it is as if we're saying to people you're not important to me, you don't even exist.

Make the effort today to show people God sees them and values them. As a mistress looks for the slightest signal...

Heavenly Father we keep looking to You, our God, for Your mercy. We notice every detail in Your word that tells us we are valued, we are loved, we are somebody, we are Your children. Thank you for Your endless bountiful love, grace and mercy. In Jesus name AMEN.
