There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the Lord said to him, "what are you doing here, Elijah?" 1 Kings 19:9

I found myself going back to 1 Kings and reading again the story of Elijah and his victory over the prophets of Baal. After his great victory where he saw the hand of God move in a miraculous and spectacular way, he was issued a threat from Jezebel. Her threat was that by this time tomorrow you will be as dead as the prophets you killed.

Elijah had just stood fearlessly against 450 prophets of Baal, but now he cowers and runs away at the threat of a single woman. The God who sees all and knows all ask Elijah a piercing question. "What are you doing here Elijah"?

God's question to Elijah pierce's me through today as well. We all have seasons of doubt and discouragement. Seasons where we may have more questions than answers. Seasons when man's voice speak speaks louder than God's. When fear is greater than faith.

Times when we look at where we are as a result of prior decisions, maybe physically or maybe spiritually. Perhaps we too hear God say "what are you doing here"?

We are children of the most High. We have royal blood flowing through our veins. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ... yet we are human with sinful natures and we too need to be asked the question "what are we doing here"?

Heavenly Father You have given us so much and do so much for us everyday. You have even taken up residency within us yet sometimes we struggle to hear Your voice. We let man's voice speak louder than Yours. We lose our bearings and find ourselves hiding in a cave like Elijah. Thank you for asking us the same piercing question you asked Elijah. "What are you doing here"? Lord help us to hear Your voice louder than any other. Strengthen us for the task You have for us, for the very God honoring lives You call us to live. I pray in Jesus name. AMEN
