Being strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; Colossians 1:11

Endurance and patience... Endurance is the ability to keep doing something difficult, painful, or stressful for a long time.

That describes really well what Jesus did for us. Hebrews 12:2 looking onto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame....

Today as I read this verse, endurance jumped out at me and I decided to do a little deeper dive on its meaning.

Hypomonē the greek word used, and it conveys steadfast endurance which clings to God in the face of pressure. More than passive waiting, it is active, faith-filled perseverance that refuses to abandon obedience or hope.

I like the phrase "clings to God in the face of pressure". Have you ever started driving and noticed a fly clinging to your windshield? As you increase speed he seems to increase his grip and refuses to let go. With the force of the wind trying to tear him away he holds on with all of his might.

Thats the image I get when I read this definition. There are many things in this life that try to tear us loose from God. With the joy (you and I justified) set before Christ He endured until it was finished. For the joy (our glorification) set before us we need to endure until our race is finished.

Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delays, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. It's easy to see why we need patience along with endurance.

Heavenly Father I pray today that we all would have the endurance of Christ. That we would hang onto You and let nothing tear us away. Often, with regret, it is our own letting go that separates us as we pursue fleshly desires. Lord forgive our weak grip and help us endure with patience and finish our race well. I pray in Jesus name. AMEN
