Also receive the HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
A Roman soldier wore a helmet to protect against a sword hitting any part of his head, including his face, cheeks, and the back of his neck. He knew that one blow to his head would significantly harm the rest of his body or even be fatal.
Why is it called the helmet of salvation?
It is interesting that were told to take up the various pieces of the armor but the Greek word used before helmet of salvation is a word that means "receive" the helmet of salvation.
Our salvation not only gives us eternal life, but it transforms our lives now. Our brains are the control center of our whole being. Whether conscious or subconscious, our brain activity directs everything about us. This means that what we allow to take up space in our minds will shape our perspective and decisions, influence our emotions, and affect the way we live.
God knows we need to protect our minds. That is where the battlefield is. Part of God's grace is that we receive a spiritual helmet that protects us against enemy blows. The sword of the spirit which is the word of God is the only offensive weapon. We have we need to know it well and use it often.
Like salvation, the helmet is a gift. Something we must recieve and wear to protect the most precious thing we have. Four of our five senses are entrances into our head. We must diligently protect every entrance, for the enemy is very cunning and knows how to work his way into our most vital control center.
Heavenly Father what a reminder today of the need to protect our minds. With all due diligence help us to do that very thing. Help us to reclaim the territory that we may have given up already and then be on guard to protect every entrance. I pray in Jesus name. AMEN AMEN
