Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me... Psalm 23:4a
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death... This phrase evokes a deep sense of peril and uncertainty, often interpreted as a metaphor for life's most challenging and dangerous moments. The "valley of the shadow of death" suggests a place of deep darkness and potential threat, akin to the treacherous ravines found in the Judean wilderness, where shepherds would lead their flocks.
For Cory Ten Boom and her sister Betsy it was the German concentration camp Ravensbruck. One bitterly cold morning, their cruel taskmaster, ordered the women outside for roll call an hour earlier than usual. Corey and Betsy walked hand in hand by a different route to the square. On their right, were outlines of barracks, a crematorium, and gas chamber, and on the left, the guards paced along the watchtower with machine guns drawn. In a true valley of the shadow of death, they prayed. Corey recounted, "we were three as we walked with the Lord and talked with Him. Betsy spoke. Then I spoke. Then the Lord spoke. How? I do not know. But both of us understood." "Isn't this a bit of heaven?" Betsy said. "Lord, one day we'll walk with you face-to-face, but even now You are giving us the joy of walking and talking with You.
The world cannot understand, nor experience this kind of peace. It is reserved for those who belong to the Shepherd. Whatever valley you are going through today, be reminded that He is there with you, and if that is true, you have nothing to fear.
Heavenly Father thank you for walking with us through the valley of the shadow of death. Truly Your children have a peace that the world cannot understand. Please be with those who may be walking through a very dark hard time in their life right now. Grant to them ears to hear your calming voice. I pray in Jesus name. AMEN
