For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

Here are some straight forward facts given with clarity that should comfort every believer. These were given in the context of considering the end of the age and what is to follow.

Light and darkness, day and night are used as metaphors in Paul's letter to describe the difference between God's children and those of the world. We are children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. Therefore we are to have a clear understanding of what lies ahead for us, versus what lies ahead for the non-believer.

In light of our standing, in light of our salvation, we are to be clearheaded and protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. For.... God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not pour out His anger on us. Christ died for us so that whether we're dead or alive when He returns we could live with Him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up Paul says.

Last week was an example to me of how the children of light live and the children of darkness live. Tuesday we had a memorial service for an infant that passed shortly after birth. It was a time of greiving, but a time of hope. A time where we could reflect on our hope and rejoice in it. Later in the week I officiated a wedding for a young couple who did not know God. The wedding itself seemed to be a pause in between being at the local bar and the party which followed. I left the reception very discouraged. What should have been a glorious day was empty without God in it.

I was reminded of Ecclesiastes 7:2 which says it's better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies - so the living should take this to heart.

Children of God are not destined for wrath on judgment day, we have been granted salvation and spared judgment for our sin. In light of that, we live in this life as children of the day, being clearheaded in our thinking, and comforted with the hope we have in Christ Jesus.

Heavenly Father thank you for our salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank you that You have given us the Holy Spirit to help us walk as children of the day. To see beyond the here and the now and live with purpose. To have hope even in the midst of suffering. Thank You in Jesus name. AMEN
